10" Record Vise

John, NY

>I am looking for a 10" bench vise... got off of my butt a little late for the Records and now need to find an alternative.

Anyone have experience with the Groz, Jorgensen or the new one from Europe which sorta looks like a Record [Lee Valley sells 'em]?

I have an economy 10" quick release which I paid about $40 and I got less than I paid for so don't want to make the same mistake yet again. Thanks

John

>I have the Jorgenson and prefer the quick release mechanism to the lever on the Record. You just turn the screw 1/2 turn to the left and pull it in or out.

How is the Jorgensen?

John, NY

>I don't mind the lever, I have it on my really cheap copy. If it worked more than 10% of the time i'd have no gripes.

How do you like the Jorgensen? Is it big enough to use as a primary vice?

Thanks

>I'm currently using a Groz quick-release vise as a front vise. It has the lever style of quick release, which I actually prefer to the 1/2-turn variety. The vise handle is a bit thinner than on a similar Record that I've used, but the vise works fine and the overall quality is good.

My only gripe is with the incredible amount of toe-in at the top of the jaws. I ended up planing down a portion of one of my wood inserts to reduce the toe-in a bit. This is the only Groz vise I've tried, so I don't know if that amount of toe-in is normal for them.

Likes and dislikes for Groz

John, NY

>Thanks for the reply, I have the small Groz and although well made it too has a lot of toe... Figured I could take care of that with the wooden inserts though. I also find that the jaw twists alarmingly when i tighten something up at one end and I hate the plastic bench stop. I too like the lever type disengagement.

>Where did you acquire the Groz? What is the country of origin? US, Canada oe ??? Anybody try the new vise(s) carried by L-V that appear to be similar to Record?

>Groz are an unusual company. They might usefully be described as an India version of Lee Valley. They source tools from many manufacturers in India (and elsewhere I suspect), But they're all spec'd, QC'd by Groz. They're selling quality stuff at very reasonable prices.

If you look closely, you'll see that a good number of David Charlesworth's metrology equipment is labelled Groz.

>Got the Groz vises from Woodcraft. Quality wise they're pretty good, finish is good too.

This is what Lee Valley said about the new vise...

Thank you for your inquiry. We have spoken to our buyer with regards the Quick Release vises, and they informed us that they are virtually identical (including the same measurements) to the Record Vises with exception to 2 features. One is the release mechanism and the second is the dog and the way it is held.

Should you wish to purchase any of the Quick-Release Steel Bench Vise from us and if you are not completely satisfied with the product, you can return it for a full refund within 90 days of your purchase, including your return postage.

My only reservation is that a 10-1/2" vise is a hell of a thing to have to return if it isn't up to spec...
