If you want an extremely challenging century, come on out to California and do the Markleeville Death Ride. IIRC the route goes over three Sierra Nevade Passes, all above nine thousand feet and the entire circuit runs about 125 miles (a double metric!). As you may know, the Western slopes of the Sierra look like innocent, tame, unoffensive, low rolling hills--except they keep rolling uphill. The Eastern side however, is called an "escarpment," which means it is straight up and down--and guess on which side the
Death Ride takes place. Ouch!
I don't know if the Death Ride is again an "official" event. I suspect not; the Highway Patrol was very unhappy with us, and for several years refused to issue the necessary permits. But just about every year the word gets around: there's an "unofficial" Death Ride.
