Backsaw tooth question

eric

>I picked up this saw (which I think is a Disston N0. 4 - very new to identifying old tools) at an estate auction. The tooth pattern seems unusual too me. The teeth almost look like one large tooth has been filed into a two smaller teeth - please look at the follow on picture which is a close up. I think the pattern of the teeth looks a little too regular to be a hack job at sharpening. I have never seen anything like this - can anyone shed some light on this tooth configuration?

Thanks,

Eric

>I have an old one around somewhere that looks a little like that. Now that I think about it, it does look like a hack job, like maybe an 8 pt that the teeth were filed down and split in two to make a 16 pt.

>Looks like normal bad sharpening to me; I've seen plenty of saws with similar teeth, some worse, some better.

It's disconcertingly easy to get that result :-(

>It does look like a bad filing job. Joint it, retooth it, set it and sharpen it and it'll be a great user.

>It looks normal to me for many saws the person sharpening used more pressure when filing one side than the other making the regular iregular sharpening patern Lightly joint and refile either rip or Xcut depending what you want to use the saw for. It's a nice saw.
