Carving

Tom Scott

>I'm hoping that someone can give me some pointers or direct me to some good information on very basic relief-type carving. I have no experience, but would like to be able to add something simple like a name, initials, date, 5 point star, etc. to flat pieces I make...similar to that below.

Can this be done with just a chip carving knife, or is ther something better suited? Recomendations for books or web sites on the subject?

Thanks,

Tom

>Tom,

I believe Lee Valley has a primer on letter carving just as you illustrated w/ the pic.

Check their book section. The bol even has templates to use.

Letter Carving in Wood by Chris Pye is excellent.

>The Pye book is good. There have been several good articles in the rags as well. The current Woodworking at Home DVD magazine has a good article (video? - not sure what to call it!). I think you can buy a copy at their web site. I met a fellow in Nashville who did beautiful lettering with a box cutter! He learned it via an article.

>for the suggestions. I will order the Pye book today, and from there, decide what chisels I will need. Looks like a whole new set of tools...bummer.

I also looked at the sample video clip from Nora Hall. I will probably hold off on this for now, but she sure makes it look easy. I'm sure that is a testament of how good she is at it.

Thanks again,

Tom

>The Pye book is excellent and more than covers what I learnt in a three day course with Chris (although that was on carving generally, not just letters). I have successfuly carved the alphabet in a few fonts now and in different sizes. Chris has a recommended list of tools for letter carving and LOML got me those for a birthday present. It is hard to see how the list might be shortened, so be prepared to spend $150 or so.

>Chris,

If you don't mind, what did Pye's list of tools include? Is it in his book? If so, I can just check it out when mine arrives.

For lettering, do you really find that you need that many chisels, guges, etc?
