Hardware question

Todd O. Cronkhite Native of Maine

>I got one of those folding tables from a friend of mine this weekend to use as a pattern for duplication. At the pivot point where two legs cross each other the maker of the original must of used some type of special hardware to do this as I can see nothing of it. Only thing I can fiqure is that it must be a double ended wood screw with a nylon bushing. Sound like a piece of hardware any of you have seen/used?

For now I just drilled for a 1/4" bolt which is no big deal as this is my prototype of the duplication. I couldn't take the original apart so I fiqured it best to make a practice copy to get the critical measurements just right. good thing I did, as for what appears to be a simple table is really a complex PITA.

>I suppose they could be mini Hanger Bolts as I have never seen a double ended wood screw. Went and looked again and there is no nylon washer in there. This device is trapped between the two legs, the pivot travel isn't much, so it's possible. Seems that in this application the machine threads would pull out of the plywood since it is trapped in there.

Maybe the maker sawed the head off of a longer wood screw, ground the sawed end to a bit of a point and used that. Since the pivot point is so little and it is trapped in between the legs it works even tho it dosen't have oposing thread directions. Plausable eh? Yeah, now I'm thinking!

Thanks for the suggestion. Todd O.

>I think what you are looking for are called Dowel Bolts. They are similar to hanger bolts only have a course wood thread on both sides. They are sometimes used to connect wooden curtain rods together. Any Hardware store should have a selection, I know that we carry them at Home Hardware in Canada.

>Hi Todd -

It could be a "Roto-Hinge" - they can be glued in place.... see link below....

>Well drats, there goes a invention opportunity down the drain eh Mike? Dowel bolts eh? I'll have to see if we have them here in the States. My bet says that I'll get the dee in the headlights look when I ask for them.

Rob, somehow I doubt that this is what the original builder used as the table is roughly 20 years old, but brother, that Roto hinge in JUST THE TICKET for this application. Thanks for infoing me one them as I think they are just all-day-long nifty.
