Couldn't Help mysef...

Todd Hughes

>Went to my every wed. auction today and in the rows and rows of stuff i saw this very old treadle Lathe. I live in old tool Hell and these things are not very common at least around here.Did buy one at this same auction about 5 years ago.Anyway this puppy is older I think with all hand forged fittings and nuts etc.The wood was in rather sorry shape esp. the bottom of the legs. The fly wheel is very unusual as it is made up of many small curved pieces that are fitted and pegged together.Different , I have never seen anything done like that. Now this thing is big and heavy and i really try not to buy stuff like this anymore...I realy do ...Honest! But I really liked it and it didn't help when this cute gal came up and wanted to know what the thing was.I explained what it was used for and how it worked and she said i had to get it.Well I don't like to disagree with a woman,[esp. a cute one!] and she even said she would help me load it.So we stood there while the auctioner worked his way to it.Once they get to it they tossed in a broken rocking chair and I got them both for $5 the minimal bid.Same price I paid for the other one by the way.Got it in the truck with out to much trouble ,[Girl was pretty strong] though when I tossed it out when I got home the fly wheel came apart. Kind of neat lathe and I do like it but really don't know why I bought it....Just couldn't help myself....Todd

>Here is a close up of the hand forged tool rest and head stock. The bed looks to be hand hewn out of oak and is actually pretty solid...T.

Wish I had room for bargains that take up that kind of space.

>Now you knpow that I love old tools as much as the next galoot, but I was hoping to see a pic of the cute girl and not the lathe. Geeeeeee Whiz, Todd, I just can't believe sometimes. ;~)

Actually pretty neat lathe. what I lie about it is that is just a crude as crude can be and I'm willing to bet that many a beautiful turning was made on it.

Don't worry about what you're gonna do with it as I'm sure that Ernie is burning up the road 'twix Kansas and Maryland as we speak. ;~)

>Ifin I was burning up the roat to Todds houst you can bet I would be after alot more than that lathe. I'm thinking I might make a radical design change in mine this weekend to get it up and running. You should see the miter box I picked up I will post pictures later. It looks like it came out of the same shop.
