hand saw question

Brad in Cocoa

>Is it possible or even worth the effort to weld a hand saw blade? I have Disston #7 with a 1/2" long crack running up from between two teeth. This crack is about midway along the blade length. This saw would be destined to be a user not a collector or show piece. I have access to a complete welding shop so it would not cost anything to get done.

thanks,

Brad in Cocoa

>I suppose anything is possiable but i would think that if you welded a saw like this you would have a big danger of it warping and not to mention the worrys about losing the temper. Will have to grind the weld down too befor using....Sounds like an exercise in goofyiness to me. I'd just go to the flea market and spend $5 ,[or less] for another common but better condition no. 7 to use. You could always just grind the teeth off up past the crack but again more work then just picking up another saw....Todd

>Make a couple back saws out of it or a stack of scrapers. keep the handle and nuts if it is nice incase you find a good blade with a messed handle. even where you live I bet if you looked you could pick up 1/2 a dozen or so on any given Saturday for less than $5 ea

>Wood working hand tools are very hard to find in my area. I am forced to drive to the middle of the state of farther to find flea markets that have old tools. All of the flea markets near me only have new junk.

>I probably need to start a new thread on this but here is what you do. 1. look in your phone book for auctioners find out what there web site is so you can look at there sale bills. most every auction has some tools not many you will want but they will have tools. 2. you need to go to the poor part of town and look for junk stores every town has poor people and places where they buy used stuff this is where you will find comon tools like saws and maybe a few planes on a good day but they will most likely be handy man or wards or somthing like that stuff for the home owner but ocasionaly there will be somthing good. 3. look in you local penny saver not much there but you can get lucky. 4. look in you local paper want adds for auctions and estate sales. Estate sale are good if you find the right ones. leave your card with the operators with what you are looking for most will call and let you know when there next sale is and if they have things you are looking for. Along the way you will notice who the local tool dealers are. tell them what you want they will let you know when they get somthing and they will make a little money and you will get tools. Cocoa is a tough place to find tools but they are there and you will find them if you look. Last summer I went to Denver a place where every one tells us Has No Tools within one morning I found several places that had tools one had loots and a reasonable price others were more along the ebay price but you would still save on shipping and be able to look over the tools first. If I know my history right that area was built up alot during the 30's-40's so there will be tools there form that era. along with the fact thet people move there to retire some will bring along there ancestors tools and they will be there also. It's time you alter your search. I wish you the best of luck. if all that fails there is allways ebay even I have been known to buy tools there like a $20 #2 I'm waiting to arive from England right now

>Dang Ernie, good info and a drive-by, too. Bet you paid more for shipping than you did for the plane.

>If the saw cuts well as is you might stop drill the crack.Drill a small hole at the very end of the hole and this may stop the crack.A carbide bit would probably be the way to go.
