removing rust from plane

>I've got a LV medium shoulder plane that I discovered today has a little bit of rust. What is the best way to clean it? It has a little on the sole and I was worried about doing something that would warp it in anyway. What do you guys do to prevent rust on your planes. It's been a couple of months since I used it and it's been sitting in my workshop. I'm in east Tennessee so we have a good bit of humidity. Any info would be appeciated. Thanks.

>Grey Scotchbrite or 0000 steel to clean light damage; to prevent rust, camellia oil for most things, Beeman MP5 spring airgun lube for hard cases (don't laugh until you have tried it), and "use the darn thing more" for all.

>Boesheild T-9 works well and it dries to a film of what I understand to be mostly parrafin wax. I have had no finishing problems since I started using it about a month ago. After using my tools a quick spray into a clean rag and quick wipe down does a geat job of keeping the rust away. Works better, faster and cleaner than anything I've tried so far(No affiliation just a person who has dealt with his share of rust).
