Help with Veritas 4 1/2

>Hey Guys,
I need to plumb your collective wisdom. I've been slipping down the slide for the last year or so...and have three planes: an old Stanley 5, an old Stanley 6 and a nine month old Veritas 4 1/2. I can set the 5 & 6 to get nice fluffy shavings but I have a heck of a time with the 4 1/2. With the 4 1/2 I seem to get thick chuncky shavings or nothing. The blade is honed and the frog seems to be fitting ok. I checked the bottom for flat and ran the plane on some 600 grit sandpaper. The scratch pattern is in a "U" with the bottom at the toe (for about an inch) and the arms (~3/16") running on either side of the plane towards the back. When I use a strait between the toe and a back corner of the plane I can see light. Do I need to work on flattening?
