Leg vise

Jack Guzman from Maine

>This is the leg vise I found at a yard sale. It was leaning against a fence and noone at the house knew what it was for.One lady said she thought her grandfather used it when making chairs.

I just wanted to see how it worked with my bench so I attached a scrap 2x4 to the back leg with an angle bracket and lag screwed it to the floor. It works great,I use it all the time ,so I haven't bothered mounting it any better.

It has great holding power and elevates the work right in front of me so I can watch my layout marks while I cut.Previously I had to squat to cut dovetails in my face vise. The bench is still low enough for effectice planing and the vise is out of my way.I do most tasks at the other end of the bench.Besides, that end vise was useless.

On another subject-I cleaned out my left end mounted tool tray to get a better look and sure enough-There are three bolts holding the tray on that I should be able to use to mount a planing stop. That tray was another useless accessory that I built into my bench before I knew better. It's great place to collect odd junk. It's in a bad spot for it's intended use.

Sorry about the spotty picture.I swept up the dust around the vise before I took it.---Jack
