Installing bandsaw tires

Michael Kieta-near Ramstein, Germany

>Hello everyone,

Yes I know this is the wrong side for this question, but I've posted this over "there" too. I know many of you have Neanderbuddies, so....I have an old Delta/Milwaukee 14 inch bandsaw. I want to replace the old tires which are hard and have splits in them. I've purchased new tires from Highland Hardware. The article I've seen in FWW makes the process of replacing the tires look very complicated, such as using a die grinder with a custom rest to true and crown the tires.

I'm concerned because the bandsaw works "fairly well" as it is. The blade comes off the wheels more frequently than it should, but it will usually track and cuts 1-2" stock fairly well. Am I excessively concerned about a simple task, or am I better off leaving well enough as is....

Thanks in advance for any suggestions, links, references, etc.

>Are the tires you bought rubber or polyurethane? If the latter, the instructions said to soak them in warm water and then install. They left out the part about "struggle for what seems like hours to get them on," but, once installed, even without gluing (you don't glue poly tires), they've been great.

And, no, I didn't do all that silly stuff about a die grinder to crown the tires - but there's a pretty strong crown on the wheels of my dinosaur-from-the-50's Power King bandsaw, to which the tires have shaped themselves.

>Die grinder? I don't even know what that is and I sure didn't use one to replace the tires on my 15" General. I used a couple of clamps to hold parts of the tire in place while I pulled, twisted and pryed (sp) the new ones in place. Once on, the blade tracked just as fine as you please and I can cut 6" cherry (though it is slow going).

>Steve and Bill,

Thanks! That was what I needed to hear. I'll be prepared for the struggle...
