Magnetizing your chisels

Magnetizing your chisels

Ray DuBose, Memphis TN

>Ive been noticing pictures lately in magazines and websites that show someone working and in the background on their pegboard is a magnetic knife holder holding their chisels. I would guess that after a short while your chisels would become magnetized.

Are there any down points to having magnetized chisels? Is sharpening an issue since everything you scrape off would stick to the chisel, or issues with laying it on a bench and a screw being pulled over and chipping the tip or anything?

Just Curious

Yup, a big pain

>They do become magnetized and it does make sharpening a challenge. Your swarf sticks to the chisel.

From personal experience.

>I stored carving chisels this way for a while. This was, for me, a bad move! The did become magnetized and would tend to stick together on the bench top. I'd normally have a dozen or so on the bench right near one another. So I'd go to grab one and get two or three being pulled along. That's a real drag :) I dumped the magnet holder fast.

For other chisels where that wouldn't be an issue it's also true that the metal particulate resulting from sharpening sticks to them. That's annoying as well.

>I keep my chisels on a stong magnet strip and it works well - the swarf issue is present, but never bothered me.

One safety tip though - store with sharp ends up and don't put your slicks on magnets. Was about 4 years ago I bumped my slick (pointing downward) and it popped off (lighter chisels don't do this as easily). Instinctively tried to catch it and all but amputated my left thumb. Surgeries, thousands of dollars of out of pocket medical bills, and a thumb that only works about 60% make this an issue I'd like to share.
