>Lyn-I posted this question below in the thread dealing with the Lee Valley PSS, but I wasn't sure you'd get to see it.

I followed your suggestion to get some additional grits and had serious problems installing the very fine grits without getting bubbles in the paper. Slitting the bubble with an exacto knife left a bump no matter how careful I was, and lifting the paper back off and using various implements to try and smooth things out while putting it back down-j roller, chamfered edge of a piece of 2 x 2-didn't improve things by much. This was a brand new platter, carefully cleaned.

Any suggestions? Even with what bubbles remained, I still got a very nice edge on the tools I worked on today. Thanks, Tony

Not a "Bench Dog"?

>Sorry to hear about that! A friend had a piece of cast iron fall on his thumb and the part that hurt worst was looking at all the woodworking he couldn't do each day until it healed.

Get well quick.............

>I'll attempt to be Lyn's remote typist to replay a message he helped me with before. I looked for this message on the archives and couldn't find it. So here it is again from memory.

When pasting the abrasive down on the platter, hold it like a taco and only let a line down the center touch the platter. Then ease the abrasive down to the platter while rubbing out the bubbles along the edge. Proceed slowly until the entire sheet is stuck down. I followed his instructions, and I wasn't able to prevent all bubbles, but the ones that were there were so small that they didn't affect the sharpening process.

Lyn,

I hope that dog received worse than he gave!

>Tony, if it helps at all, I have the same problem you describe. I use the platter, bumps & all because it leaves a mirror finish on the chisels & plane blades...go figure! I'm about ready to replace the offending disc & when I do I intend to wet the platter thoroughly prior to applying the new disc. Did you ever put decals on model airplanes when you were a kid? Same princlple.

Chain-mail armour?

>Well, I guess I feel kinda justified with my fear of dogs. Little dogs, big dogs....doesn't matter. Unless they are on the leash of an owner who outweighs them by 50+lbs, I'm scared outta my shoes.

Heal well Lyn. Will you be doing some testing along the lines of your famed high-angle smoother tests but geared towards chain-mail armour?

Take care,

>Thanks, Frank-I did the decal thing longer ago than I care to remember. The part of the "wet the platter" approach that seems counter-intuitive is the notion that the adhesive will continue to be effective after it gets soaked. I'll give it a try when the current (heavily-bubbled) disks wear out. (Also using Paul's taco application approach.) You're right-they seem to work anyway. Thanks again. Tony

Getting xtra mileage from discs

>Tony, I've also discovered that I can use one of those rectangulare chuncks of rubber they sell to clean disk/belt sander abrasives. It cleans the swarf off the little discs also.
