I think I done good, a gloat, long
Randy Johnson Connersville, IN
>Today I attended an estate auction. The gentleman had been a friend of mine for almost forty years, his son and graduated high school together.
He was a longtime member of the MWTCA and specialized in planes, braces, and Yankee screwdrivers.
Personally I am much more of a Normite than the rest of you here but I do have a weakness for hand planes.
I went to the auction hoping I could get just one piece to remember him by. I left with shelves he used to display some of his things at shows, an intact #6C type 9 in need of minor cleaning, and a #12 that was short the handles. In two boxes of "parts" I got everything needed to assemble a (I think) 604 type 10 and a 605C type 10 with the only problem being one of them will have the wrong cap iron. One of the boxes had a complete bevel guide, the kind that clamps on the side of the larger planes, and another one that is missing only the cam that fastens it to the plane. There were a number of totes and handles, both low and high knob and a few beds and frogs that may or may not go together as well as assorted chipbreakers and irons.
I also bought a handmade bowsaw that I gave him as a present for a really big favor he did for me. The first time I bought it I paid twenty bucks. I cost me six bucks today.
Total damage to my wallet was $106.00
BTW, for those of you into braces and Yankee screwdrivers, they almost gave them away. One Yankee screwdriver that Cliff had a $75 price tag on sold as "choice on the table" for three dollars.
Two individuals got literally an armload of braces and Yankee Screwdrivers for under ten bucks for the lot.
