O/T Everything has gone HUGE

Todd O. Cronkhite Native of Maine

>O.K. mucked about trying to straighten out this computer ALL DAY except for the 3 hours that I went out and worked on my woodpile and I am right at the end of my patience. I deleted a program called Megaphone and everything went down hill from there. Graphics and writing have quadrupiled in size, and got some type of quiltwork background stuff that won't go away.

I've can't find any thing in Start-Settings-Display to change this stuff back to what it was. Do ya' think I messed up when I deleted Megaphone?

Hope this post in normal size, right now it is huge. I hate technology and sometimes wish I never got involved with it.

Do you use Internet Explorer?

>If you use IE, and the web is where all the huge text is, go to View/Text Size, and pick a smaller text size (I use 'smaller')

>Thanks Clay,

I had stumbled into that just a few minutes ago. It helped a little, but the font is still too big. The grapics got just a little smaller also, but not much and are still quite distorted. Or is it that the grapicsa got smaller and the writing is the same size, hard to tell really.

Do I use IE? Well, I dunno. I access the internet thru my NetZero desktop shortcut icon. Once Netzero is running I can use IE as well tho.

If it helps you guys to help me I am running Windows 98. I have a Windows 98 book that I am trying to use, and I'd like to meet the fool that wrote it in a dark alley sometime. Seems I can never find the problem that I have in a book, and untimatly stumble into the solution. Problem is I mess up 4 other things in the process of solving 1. :~(

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh well, so it goes eh.

>Try this: Close all programs that are running. Put your mouse in the middle of the screen and click once with the right mouse button. A screen will pop up. Click the very bottom choice from the menu that says "properties". Another screen will pop up. Click on the top right tab that says "settings". Make sure the "screen resolution" says something like 600 X 800, and click "Okay." It might prompt you that you need to restart the computer for the settings to take effect. That's okay. Let it restart and see whether it makes a difference in your display.

>I have an idea.

I do this with my parents when they have problems.

I think, with a few minutes where I can remote control your machine I can solve a lot of your problems.

Provided you trust me, I'd be glad to spend a few minutes working with you on Sunday. I'm in Portland Oregon, so we have a bit of time difference.

Here's what I'd ask you to do. After 9a Pacific time, call me. I'll walk you through installing an item or two. Then you simply go online and I can take remote control of your mouse and keyboard while I see what's on your screen. I'll bet in half an hour I can help a bunch.

No offense if you're not interested. I'd just like to help.

If you want to take me up on this offer, go to www.sloop.net. You'll see my office phone number there. Pick option 8 then 3 from the auto attendant. Follow instructions and you'll get to me - if you get voice mail, leave me a message. I'll get back to you ASAP.

Best wishes,

Greg

Closing Programs

Todd O. Cronkhite Native of Maine

>Bruce,

That seems to be the root of many problems--closing Running Programs. I think everything is closed but apparently there are programs running in the background so something that I want to do won't work because of these phantom running programs that I don't know how to close. Drives me blinking bananas.

I did manage to get Scan Disk and my C Drive Defraged. Defrag took 8 hours and 2 minutes!

Thanks for the suggestion tho, I'll try to give it a whirl.

Todd O. Still twiddling the knobs and pushing the buttons, but am thinking pretty strongly of introducing my PC to my "little friend" named .357

>If I understand correctly, ToddO, your text and graphics are DISPLAYED huge. Is that correct?

If your mouse has a wheel on it, which likely would be between the two mouse buttons, hold down your keyboard Ctrl key and move the mouse wheel. Should make stuff get bigger or smaller.

Best, Ted

Re: Closing Programs

>Todd, (wrt the .357 comment) while I was in school changing occupations (at middle age -- not a fun prospect) I worked as a computer tech for a company that took customer service calls for Gateway computers. One very frustrated dad complained that his early teenage son was setting the conditions for computer use and that if dad ever put a password on the computer again, he'd fix it so only he, the son, could use it. The dad wanted to know what to do. I told him he had to be the dad in the family, that the computer was his, and that he could throw it out the window if he wanted to.

The dad was delighted, but my supervisors weren't.

>Maybe you computer went into safe mode. To fix that you need to restart it and hold down f8 or ctrl while its restarting and select the start in normal mode when you get the option. I have read that computers can become unstable from faulty hardware, faulty software and a lack of space.

If you suspect its hardware, you can disable them one by one in your device manager (control panel - performance & maintenance - system - hardware - device manager). If its a program, close all programs then go to add/remove programs in your control panel and remove any programs that you suspect may be causing trouble. I struck trouble one time by installing a very early model program once but the trouble happened when I uninstalled it.

lack of space. Open your My computer folder and right click on the C drive and click properties. If you're getting low on space (less than 100mb) it may be time to uninstall programs you don't need and archive files that don't need on to a recordable cd (if have a cd writer) or disks or some storage device.

Microsoft have a good knowledge base to enter your query or keywords at www.support.microsoft.com or push F1 on your own computer.
