Pity...

Ben Franklin

>With the love of handtools we find here, I was sad to discuss today with a friend who has decided to throw away the "junk" that his father accummulated. He said that he had just thrown away a large trashcan full of files, for instance...

He actually does appreciate tools and the cachet of having tools that belonged to his father and grandfather. It's just that after he has already filled his own small workshop with tools, he doesn't have a way to deal with the rest of the stuff... In the case of files, again, he said that he had saved 3 examples of each one, and thrown the rest out, because he doesn't have the time, storage and patience to deal with the rest...

The chisels and handplanes have already found a home within the family. The 100+ year-old lathe was given away to a good home.

Anyone in Ottawa interested in helping this guy? (I'm not positive that he wants help, BTW)

>I can appreciate his dilemma, though. When we broke up my uncle's shop, six tool-using people divvied up the contents of a one-and-a-half-car garage. My two sons and I were still loading tools long after everyone else stopped - but even among the three of us, we had a hard time with the sheer volume of what Charlie stuffed into that tiny space. We wound up leaving a whole corner set of shelves filled with bolts and other hardware - we were just satiated.
