New bow saw & african mahogany

>The bow saw is made from beech and scraps of bilinga, mahogany and cherry. The blade is a replacement blade for german bow saws. Thanks go to Bug Bears pages. The steel rule measures up to 60cm. The need arose with Adam's challenge.

The background is khaya ivoriensis which I understand is your african mahogany. It is planed with my japanese high end plane (the blade alone weighs 417gr) It is a preliminary planing for looking into the wood; finishing comes later. The plank is stack sawn if that is the right term. It is not quared and is the whole width of the tree and rough sawn hence the need for looking.

>That's a very gracefully design, well done. Now some questions if you don't mind...

How did you make the handles?

What type of string did you use for the tensioning?

Very nice!

>William has a good memory, I posted the method in august (octagon handle). The other, second handle is better as it is of the same bilinga which was used in the floor of our national operahouse. It has a real shiny surface after planing and the grain structure is mostly very tight and so easy to work. Ther is no metal in either so it is interesting to see how the dowels last.

The string is made from heavily waxed linen twine that is used in sewing leather which I happened to have on hand. It is wound seven or eight times around and once loosely around itself and the finishing knots are like the ones used on fishing rods. Thanks for encouragement.
