My workshop/garage was broken into last night

Rick Hoppe (Los Angeles)

>My wife and I got in late last night from visiting my parents in Denver. I was exausted and when I finished emptying the car of luggage I forgot to lock it. This morning I discovered my cell phone was stolen and the garage door was open. They'd used the clicker in the car to open the garage door. Running into the garage, I saw that it had been ransacked. They must not have been looking for tools because I was relieved to see that none of my tools (LN planes and saws, antique planes, power tools, etc.), had been stolen.

About an hour later I went back into the shop and discovered that the two large plastic tubs I had brought back from visiting my folks were gone. They were all taped up with duct tape and I guess he decided to take them and cut through the duct tape later.

This was the absolute worst thing he could have stolen because the contents of the tubs were hand tools owned by my father, my grandfather and my great-grand father. I'm posting here because I know you guys above all will know what I'm going through. I don't think I'm going to tell Dad. He's 85 and very frail right now.

>Hi:

I am almost ill for you. Not only did you lose some great tools, you lost a part of your heritage. Cell phones can be replaced.

I hope and pray that somehow you get them back.

>Rick,

I feel your pain. Perhaps you might post descriptions or identifying marks of the tools here and at other hand tool forums. We handtool users could keep an eye out for them at flea markets, ebay, etc.

>Bad thing is they will probably just toss them thinking they are junk and not worth any thing when they are priceless to you. Around here paun shops don't buy hand tools and I don't think many fences will either. eBay is to much work and they arent smart enough to use it any way. Sorry about the loss.

>Oh my god the pain you must be feeling must be excruciating. Man, it hurts me to hear this, I just can't imagine your pain and anguish.

Hopefully you called the police to get this documentated. Best suggestions I can come with is to notify the local pawn shops and antique shops to be on the look out for these little bastards. they might not be interested in purchasing these tools, but they might be willing to help catch the thieves. If nothing else maybe they'd be willing to buy them and sell them back to you at their cost, which I'm sure won't be much.

Damn crackheads looking for a quick buck I'll bet.

Man Rick, I feel for ya man, this has really got to suck.

>Rick,

That's a real shame. I never feel so connected with the past as when I slip my hands onto the same tools that the hands of some long ago craftsman had held. That connection is much stronger when that long ago wood worker is a relative.

Have you thought about posting fliers around your neighborhod? If you let people know why those tools are valuable to you--much more valuable than they would be to anyone else--it's just possible they might find their way back to you. You might even offer some small reward and promise "no questions." Such appeals have worked before.

Garage Door Open Alert *LINK*

Hoa Dinh

>Hi Rick,

Sorry to hear that, especially about losing part of your heritage.

I installed a "garage door open alert" to the garage doors. In the last 10 years, it's saved me many times from accidentally leaving the garage doors open (either because I forgot to close them, or because the safety device stopped the door from closing).

The device is nothing but an X10 module (see link below), 2 magnetic relays (one for each door), and two X10 receivers. When either garage door is open, a lamp behind the TV set in the family room downstair and a lamp next to a night table in the master bedroom upstair will be turned on. I also plugged in a small radio to the receiver outlet upstair (e.g. to wake me up at night).

The total cost is about $50. It's worth every penny.

>Rick,

Go and advertise... place posters in the neighborhood... explain your story... thieves can sometimes be persuaded to give back 'junk' that is of sentimental value only. You would be surprised.

-g- who was mugged once and persuaded the mugger to pay for the damage! A mugger with a heart - and that IS true!

>As one who's been there, I feel your pain. As has been suggested from others, put out flyers and check around pawn shops and antique stores. The police should make all vendors at the local fleas aware of the theft, also. You could also call local radio stations and ask if they'll "blast" the airwaves with an ad. A lot of radio stations have community bulletin boards that don't cost anything.

Hope you find your tools.

>Rick... My heart goes out to you. I had my mechanic's box broken into once at a shop I worked at....8K gone, but the worst part was feeling violated. Its a shame since those tools were irreplacable.

Alan, I've followed through on your idea for posting fliers.

I want to thank all of you for your support and suggestions.

>Sorry to hear about your misfortune, ah the perils of living in the city and not having big dogs.....Most likely done by some neighbors kids or other small time opportunist.Probably when they saw what was in the boxes they dumped them and the contents someplace since it was no good to them and they didn't want to have it on them if they got caught. While it is a slim chance wouldn't hurt you to check the neighboring dumpsters and other likely dump sites such as isolated parking spots.Posters are a good idea as well.....think the chances of getting them back is slim, but good luck anyway....Todd
