wenworth saw vice question

eric

>I found a what appears to be a massive cast iron saw vice a junk shop today it has "Wentworth No. 2" IIRC cast into the jaw. It has four lugs for mounting to a bench or beam and a (it looks like it could be mounted on a wall?) The jaws are about probably 14"+ in length. The clamping mechanism is a rotating cam that bears against and arm extending from one of the jaws. The jaws touch for about an inch at the ends and then have a gap extending almost the entire length of the jaws when jaws are shut. The gap appears to be wider than the thickness of a saw blade. I would like to learn to sharpen my handsaws, I've done one in a machinist vice with wooden blocking that worked ok, and am wondering if this saw vice is worth $25 asking price. Other than the jaws, the mechanical cation is smooth and there is no rust present.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

>I would buy it. That said I am spending your money:-) I have a no name saw vice that is a flea market find. It works fine and it too has the bowed jaws of most metal saw vices. This is to be sure that the ends of the vice grip the blade also. They spring to contact the saw blade in use. A large branded saw vice will probably return most of your investment if you don't like it. If in doubt check completed items for saw vices on ebay.JR

>Thanks. I was concerned about the gap, but if that's normal I go pick it up. Found some similar vices at vintage saws and it looks like a good price.
