Stanley #4 question

Kerry in Fort Sask, Alberta

>Hi folks,

I picked up a #4 off ebay a while back - it's not that old - one of the purple colored ones (kind of icky, but it was fairly cheap). I cleaned it up and filed down the frog to let it seat metal to metal against the body (it was paint to paint originally), but when I put the blade back in, the blade and even the edge of the chipbreaker extend through the mouth even with the blade retracted all the way. I imagine that before I filed, when the frog seated paint on paint with the body that it could have been retracted more. Is there anything I can do other than file the hole on the chipbreaker larger - the one that accepts the adjustment piece? I hope I've explained this reasonably well.

>The edge of the chipbreaker is a problem. It may not be the correct one for the plane. The blade will adjust to the correct depth by sliding the chipbreaker up or down the blade as necessary. The chipbreaker may be reformed to move the "hump" back up the chipbreakers length and ground down to shorten the length from the slot to the blade edge end. Other chipbreakers are available from various sources if you deem the work not doable.JR
