>I have a #71 router plane with a single 1/2"bit.It's great for leveling the bottom of shallow mortises. I found a need for a narrower bit today so I dug an allen wrench out of my tool box and started grinding a flat on the bottom. I discovered that I don't have a clue how to make this thing into a 1/4" cutter.Anyone done this? I need help.----Jack
>The main problem I had was that I realized that if I continued grinding a flat on the bottom of the hex shaped el of the wrench until the cutting end was flat,I would have to grind more off the bend for there to be cutter clearance. It seems to me this would make the bend too weak. There are details here that I'm missing.---Jack
I did this with both a 3/8" and 1/4" allen wrench and ground about a 10 degree clearance on the sole of the blade which did cut into the angle. However if you look at the blade that comes with the stanley types it isn't as thick of connection as the bend left after grinding. I think that you put enourmous torquq on allen wrenches with intended use so for a cutting blade what is left is more than adequate.
>Thanks Tom.I started my day by making a bit.It took about 15 minutes and it's crude but it works for the job at hand. My problem was ,I was trying to use the whole short leg of the wrench.I simply cut it short and then shaped it.---Jack
