Winchester 3010 jack plane

John Longwitz-Doraville, GA

>I have acquired a Winchester 3010 in real good shape. The only markings on it are: Winchester with trade mark below it behind the front knob and 3010 behind the frog. The blade is marked Winchester with trade mark below and made in USA below that. The lever cap has no markings on the obverse side but the reverse has the notched rectangle Stanley with SW heart as a very faint casting indentation. The knob and tote are rosewood and the japanning is very thick. There is also a raised rib about 1/2" in front of the blade. Any info as to date of manufacture. Who made. Is the lever cap a replacement etc. would be appreciated. It looks like a great user.

I believe Winchester....

>planes with the "30" prefix were made by Sargent and the ones with a W prefix (W-5, etc) were made by Stanley in the Bedrock pattern. Sounds like someone put a replacement cap on it. Unfortunately this cap makes the plane worthless and useless and since I only live in Athens, you can bring it to me for proper disposal next time you're up this way! Did you get the plane locally? If so, you're one lucky duck.

>...since posting I did a little Google searching. I found 2 examples that are like mine and both have Winchester on the cap with red infill. Still one nice "Frankenplane" as is but I've already inquired from an antique dealer on the net who has the proper cap listed in their inventory. I won the plane on ebay on an off night when the bidding didn't get out of hand. Hope this doesn't turn me into a Winchester collector as most of their stuff is real pricey.....regards...John
