By request....

Rob Lee

>Hi

As promised, we ran about 40 sets of brass knobs (just as easy as 1 or two once the tooling was set up) for the large shoulder plane the two planes can be seen here:

Ctr Knob

LHS Knob

The brass knobs shown are a tad smaller in diameter than the wood knobs, and add .2 lbs (3.2 ounces) net to the plane.

I still prefer the wood, but am also quite happy to sell those who want em brass knobs.theyll be about $7.50 per pair :) .

Of course customer service wont be happy with me when they see this post.so please dont call em about it, theres no inventory or part number in our system, and they havent got a clue that weve done this.

Ill post a product number in this thread once weve got one .

Cheers

Rob

>I like the handle on the hatchet at the top of the second picture.... :- ). Well, I'm assuming a hatchet/axe as I can't see the head though the polished silver color makes me think it is a hammer or mallet.

Where's the dovetail plane? How about a good plow plane? And panel raisers? C'mon....my wallet thinks you're a tortoise! ;- ).

I suspect that the brass version would sell better if you put 10 of each type on the shelf and waited.

Maybe a do it yourself wooden knob kit - a'la your spokeshaves - would satisfy those who want wooden knobs.

Rick Hoppe (Los Angeles)

>Rob,

I'd consider making the brass knobs stock just for the aesthetics of it. The brass knobs go with the rest of the brass in the piece.

The wood knobs add a third color and material and feels less unified and "hodge podgy".

Hmm, I'm in two minds...

Alice Frampton, UK

>The asthetic bit of me says "ooo, pretty, me want" (shallow, I know), but then there's this stern injunction on the back of the LV catalogue that "comfort is more important than general asthetics"...

Of course, what it really needs is some circular depressions ;~)

Ain't never gonna eliminate functional elements for aesthetics.

>The brass looks nicer to me, but I guess I'd defer making a decision until I held one of each in my hand. Heh. That said, I've made all my LV purchases on line, with only the LV descriptions, pictures, instruction sheets and WoodCentral's consensus to go on.

BTW, I've said this before, but I really like the LV instruction sheets, most of which are available on line. There are some really insightful instructions on sharpening that work for tools in general, just as an example.

Boy, Did I open a can o' worms

Scott Burr in Ben Lomond CA

>Well all, how's that for listening to voice of the customer. Well done Rob. I feel it looks better in brass, but their still ugly to me. Please take no offence, its just one designer to anothers style differences. I got to agree with Lyn about the side rings on the planes too.

More than aesthetics

Lyn J. Mangiameli

>It's just that I don't find them functional, indeed, for some they are counter-functional. I have both the LV and the Lie Nielsen versions of all the planes you put those ugly things on. In every case, I don't find the LV circular depressions to offer any functional advantage (this is for the depressions, not the holes on the shoulder planes, which I find both aesthetically and functionally desirable).

Obviously for traditional bench plane use, they have no function (and I would note that for more and more woodworkers, this will be those planes predominant use). For shooting use, not only do I find not find any gripping advantage over the L-N's used for the same purposes, but worse, I find the circular depressions do not line up with the natural grip of my hand. The circular depressions will align naturally with only a very limited range of hand size; for those hands which do not fall into that range, they detract from, rather than enhance function.

I know you've heard this from me before, but you've reference me and the circles over several threads now and I don't want the impression left that my criticism of these abominations is solely aesthetic.

Dean Burke - Yakima, WA

I vote for the BRASS knobs

>Sorry Rob, wood seems out of place within the overall shape, size & design of this plane.

I've got the 0.7" plane, now I need to sell my L-N 073 to get the big one! ;-)

ABSOLUTELY AWESOME PLANE!Thanks for making it available to the World!

Lyn J. Mangiameli

>I agree. I think that it would have looked better with the high rear knob, and a lower, squater knob up front. I had actually encouraged them to make the entire front end even more ergonomic (in this case hand friendly).
