Big THANKS re: Choosing a bench

Andrew Pallas

>Dear All

Firstly apologies for taking so long to reply, unfortunately some people seem to think that there is more to life than getting involved with woodwork! Plus I frequently struggle with a very unreliable ISP.

Secondly I want to say a huge thank you for all the information, insight, encouragement and much needed arse kicking you have provided me with. On reflection its clear that I dont yet know what I need in a bench, otherwise I wouldnt have needed to ask all of you.

I have indeed decided to build a basic bench, after all what makes a woodworker is that they make things from wood. In fact I plan to start by making some solid saw-horses and clamping an old desktop to them to give me a surface on which to build a bench. I had previously discounted a self build bench as I saw the all singing all dancing benches, and felt I wouldnt be able to make one of these using my cheap workmate impersonator and hand tools alone.

I figure that as was suggested I could spend the money saved on more tools, so Im going to risk lighting the blue touch-paper again by asking for advice on the purchase of a jointer plane. Have any of you any experience of the LN low angle jointer? I have the low angle jack and we get along fine having simplicity in common.

The other options I have considered at the moment are the LN No. 7 or the Clifton No.7 (a bit cheaper.)

Thanks again

Andrew

>Just bought a 24" Knight toolworks jointer should be somewhere in shipping. I haven't tried the LA LN jointer but do have a 608 Bedrock I bought off of e-bay. Made a new iron for it myself with 1/8" O1 pretty good plane for a total of $137.00US

>Good for you Andrew. Try not to get bogged down in designing the perfect bench. as your woodworking develops you will start to find things in your bench that you wish you had or had done differently. Then you can build another. Steve

>I'll second Steve's comment about finding things to change on your bench. I haven't finished the vices on my bench, but have since decided that I could have done it differently.

I have a Clifton #7 and love it. However, I have been wanting to get into the wooden planes. But since I have the Clifton my desire right now is in a smoother, hollow & rounds, & moulders. I can say that the Knight smoothers at the Tornado Alley Galoots were pretty nice. I'd love to try a C&W plane too. I hear they work wonderfully too.

Way too many things to try and not enough time or money!
