Sharpening Box

>Gerry,

After much searching I found the link for you.

This is how to get to it:

-At the top of the screen select the "Search" option.

- When that screen opens up put in the dates box for between 9 August and today and in the Messages posted by block at the bottom put in John Truxell-Svenson. (Don't for get to click on the little circles to blacken them in for that box)

-Hit the Search button

-when that scree opens up you are looing for a thread titled "Another Data Point, and a mini-hijack..." by John Truxell-Svenson on August 24th at 9:27 a.m. Open it up, and click on the hightlighted words "Sharpening Box". this will take you to a meassage from the Old Tools List.

-follow along the desription of how to make a sharpening Box. Very easy, I made one in just a few hours.

A few tips that worked for me:

-for a base I used a 2x4 that is longer than my longest stone

-for the side rails I used some malimine covered plwood. these side rails are just a wee bit higher that the top of the stone when placed on the base.

-for a tool holder I used a section of what I think was stair railing. It was flat on one side and round on the other is all I know. Once built i discovered that I think I could of used a swuare piece as once the blade is resistered on the stone you are good to go anyway.

-On the base, at the end closet to me I nailed a small strip of wood for the stone to butt against.

-At the other end of the base I bored a hole and run a bolt up thru it, than made an adjustable stop with a slot in it's center for the bolt that's slides back and forth about 4 inches or so to accommodate shorter stones. The adjustable stop is held tight with a wingnut.

Do some mocking up before commiting to cutting your pieces.

-I made two holders, one for chisels with the bolts kinda' closer together, and one for plane blades with the hold further apart.

If you've got any further questions feel free to give me a shout alright.

>I saw this post on the Porch a while back and made something similar. For the top 'rails' I screwed and countersuck some aluminum angle. It is as smoothe as silk and you don't need to wax or worry about the melamine edging delaminating. I also added a lip on the bottom front edge so it can be hooked over the edge of my bench...like a bench hook. In the dowel, I added some fine-ish sandpaper (400 or 600 grit I think) to the lower surface (which contact the bevel side of the blade) to give a bit of grip. This helps keep things from shifting during tightening or use.

I think you will like it, if you try it.

I need an aproperate pull for this drawer any ideas? I might have to make one of them boxes it sounds easy enought but so is free handing.
