Ageing brass?

Ernie Miller Topeka

>I just recieved an infill that I bought it looks as it has been over cleaned in the past as it has scratches in a swirl on the sides If I were to polish out the scratches how do I quicken the aging process? I just got it at lunch and I have no wood at the desk? (what is up with that?) so I have no idea how it will work. I think I might have over paid on this one.

>Ernie, find a nice big chunk of board about the size of the top of your desk and put all your desktop junk on it so you are always ready. You never know when you need to test a plane.---Jack

>You can put a patina on brass by fuming with ammonia just like you would oak.Don`t let the ammonia contact the brass directly.

>Hey, if Ed Snow can replace his bed with a workbench, no reason why you can't replace your desk with one. They're both working surfaces (desks and workbenches, that is).

Digression (as if the above isn't) - anyone heard from Ed lately? Wonder how he's doing?

>So how long should I leave it in the tent with the amonia? Will it effect the rose wood stuffing? I played with it for a minute last night I think I am going to like this over priced toy. I didn't take time to sharpen it but it it worked pretty good out of the box.

>Cold bluing (for guns) does a good job. Just apply as directed, and use 0000 steel wool to lighten it back up...(it will turn very dark from the bluing)

Did too marry

Bill Houghton, Sebastopol, CA

>33 years this June, and very well indeed.

However, she'd never go for a workbench in the house. She did, on the other hand, not quiver at all when I bought a wood lathe this last weekend.

Please forgive my ignorance.

Why do you want to age the brass?

>getting brass to age up so that it looks right can be hard, much harder then steel or iron. I use a chemical that is marketed just for aging brass. Can be found in hobby stores etc. Think it is mostly phosphoric acid.I have used gun blueing and bleach with OK results.Everything works much better if you can heat or at least warm up the brass first.

You didn't say where you got the plane but I am betting it came right from England not to long ago. Many of the English it seems have a fetish to buff anything made out of brass till it shines like so much bling bling. The first time i went to a tool show I saw a table of tools that a guy from england was selling and I about had to put my sun glasses on to keep from being blinded! Some were buffed so hard that the markings were just about gone.I talked once to a gun collecting friend of mine and he said they used to do the same to guns till they discovered how much it hurt the price of them so now they for the most part leave them alone.....Lets hope they get smart about the tools now too........Todd

Don`t know what it would do to the rosewood,I know it turns purpleheart dark brown.Maybe Sam could tell you,he`s the finishing guru.

Did Todd just say

Todd O. Cronkhite Native of Maine

>Bling, bling?

Gerry, I remember when on Badger Pond Ray W. posted a pic of the little work bench that he kept beside his desk. Was a neat little thing and he said it was a great way to relieve stress from time to time. Wish I had saved a pic of it to disk. did you evere find that sharpening box thread I was talking about last night? I had to rush off the computer as a thunder storm was brewing up.

Bling bling? Todd? Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaw, couldn't be.

I didn't think I'd ever see those words here. Nevermind they were very apt descriptors.

I'm still grinning about it.

>Birchwood Casey brass black will turn it various shades of brown depending on how long you apply it. Usually available in gun shops. Ammonia fumes turn copper green so I'm not sure what it does to brass. I have some scraps I'll test. BTW...was a sculpture major in college and spent a few years as a metalsmith doing fabricating and patina work.

>Does the Ali G show, show here in the states? When, and where?

I've heard him and seen him a couple of times in promo type stuff, but never his show.

(Guess that may show how little TV I actually watch, but anyway...)

I need to start taping the Red Green show too and catching up on that occasionally.

Thanks,

Greg

I`d rather watch Norm than that tripe, that`s why I stay in the shop or read most evenings.

I'd love to see one sometime. I'll have to keep that in mind when I'm out your way sometime. Not that it happens often, though we might be out to Wisconson in Nov. (Not that that's close or anything - but closer than here...)
