Do gimlets work? Bradalls?

Roy from Cincy

>I'm trying to get rid of my electric drill, but I still like it for drilling screw holes. I've read about gimlets and bradalls, but I don't know where they would work and not work. Are there any other good choices for drilling screw holes in the neanderly correct way?

Push drill

Bob Hackett

>Smaller that a yankee scewdriver but works the same way.

I use it far more than gimlets or bradawls.Come to think of it,I use it far more than it`s cordless counterpart.

They work fine,Roy

>But it's still horses for courses.

When I'm mounting hinges or other accurate work, I use a bradawl.

For most work but, I use a cordless/corded drill.

Cheers,

Andrew

>I agree with Bob: I have both gimlets and a pushdrill. I reach for the pushdrill first, second and third. Much quicker and easier.

>I never use a powered drill in my shop.I do use one all day at work though. For cabinet screws I use a small eggbeater or a push drill. For some in softer woods I'll use a scratch awl with a good sharp tip.---Jack

>Roy,

I use my gimlets all the time. They're handy and they work extremely well in softwoods; they don't work nearly so well in hardwoods. I have an egg beater that I use on hardwoods if there aren't many screws; if there are lots of screws I get out my alternately powered drill.

Gimlets are often 1st and best option

Angus Barclay, in New Zealand

>For a few small holes, a gimlet is often the best option. You can put at least two or three holes in a piece using a gimlet and hang it back in the tool rack in the same amount of time it takes to just put drillbit in the chuck of a pushdrill or eggbeater. Of course, if you're doing a lot of holes, then various drills start to stack up a bit better in comparison.

I reckon you need - at a minimum - 3 different size gimlets, small and medium eggbeaters and twist-bits to fit, AND 10in and 12in braceS and a set of bits to fit.

Brad awl pronunciation OT

Adam Cherubini, NJ

>Andrew,

Can you tell me how folks pronounce "brad awl" in Australia? I've heard English pronunciations, including "brawl" which I thought unbelievable.

Anybody else? Bugbear? Angus?

Re: Brad awl pronunciation OT

Angus Barclay, in New Zealand

>Here in New Zealand I pronouce that particular tool as:

"brad" - same as the name of a small nail or a character from the Rocky Horror Picture Show

"all" - without any pronunciation of the W in the middle.

I have no idea how Australians pronounce such a word. It may be similar to the way New Zealanders pronounce it, but Australians and New Zealanders are fond of mangling the English language, so it may be very different too.

>I've got a J S Fray tool handle that I carry in my toolbox at work. It has a gimlet in it along with a chisel and gouge tip. (I don't use the screwdriver bits because of their size...too small, and everything is either phillips, sq. drive, or now they've come out with a torx screw.) I've got another unmarked tool handle that I use sometimes that has a bradawl in it.
