Weekend Finds

Rob Brophy

>Not much to report for rust hunting this weekend, but last weekend was great...found a 55lb Peter Wright anvil at a yardsale for twenty bucks CDN ($15.41USD). It's marked 0 1 27, so if I remember correctly the first digit is hundred weight or 112 lbs, second is quarters of hundred weight and the last is any remainder under 28lbs...0+28+27=55lbs?

The anvil has seen some hard use and the horn will need a little filing, but the back isn't swayed and I'm certain the red paint will scrape off easily.

Anyone else have any luck at the Flea Markets/Garage sales?

>Yard sales everywhere this weekend. I found a new source. One guy having a garage sale happens to deal in used tools. He sold me a nice 28"jointer woodie ,4 different sized butcher gouges and a real clean 12"x6" steel stanley SW era square. I love those smaller framing squares. This is the first one I've found that isn't either cheap, painted or rusted beyond reading. The best part though is he told me he gets new stuff all the time and I got his card. His prices were not bad for a tool dealer.$2 each for the chisels and the square. He wanted $20 for the plane but it's in pretty nice shape so I paid it.---Jack

Not really for this forum

>unless I adopted the dog-powered approach, but I'll gloat anyway.

I picked up an older-than-I-am-and-that's-saying-something Craftsman wood lathe, which turns out to have been made by Clausing. Missing its toolrest, which was just a 1/2" shank rest anyway, as well as the clamping block that went under the toolrest banjo, and it needs new bearings. But really heavy, well-designed castings (it took two of us to load it into the car), and 1" by 8 tpi spindle, like Delta, which means getting faceplates and all will be easy. Now I just need (a) time and (b) space in my shoplet.

Moses Yoder in White Pigeon, MI

>I found something very precious; much more so than any tool I could find. I found time to spend with my dad. Yesterday morning we met at a parking lot by the 80/90 toll road north of Middlebury, IN, and drove over to Cabelas in Dundee, MI. We will go salmon fishing together later this month, and stocked up on the miscellaneous gear we will need. It was about 5 hours driving with him and my mom, and we had some very interesting conversation, and the Cabelas store is quite a sight.

My dad is 70 years old, and his brother that was just a year older than him died two weeks ago, suddenly of a heart attack, so he is feeling the reality of coming towards the end of his life, which came out several times during the day. His oldest brother died a few years ago, so dad is the oldest surviving of his family. He used to run a sawmill and carried thousands of railroad ties by himself; he smoked for over 20 years, and otherwise just tore up and neglected his body, and is really feeling the results now, with several disks removed in his back, both hip joints replaced and a knee replaced, and taking medication to lower his cholesterol. Fishing and talking about fishing is one of the few things that really makes him light up, and it always makes me feel good when I can brighten his day a little. I really enjoy the time we have together, and like to make the most of it when I have the opportunity.

$5 bedrock

jared

>Well I finally found it the elusive $5 bedrock. It was a round sided 604c. Obvious that the seller had no idea what he had. It needs some work to clean it up, some good pitting on thesole, the tote was cracked but glueable and teh lever cap had part of it broken away but I have a spare bedrock cap that I got on a no name plane for $7 at an antique store. He had another stanley #4 that was broken, rusted and incomplete at also at $5 but I passed on that one. Also got a 112 1/2 SW scraper plane in real nice shape for $27, the wood sole was original and not broken, The wood handle is real nice. Then I got a keenkutter k5 C for $20. no rust just a nice patina on that one. This stuff is the best I have ever found at a local 3 times a summer flea market. It pays to go early I guess. Most of the vendors dont climb out of their campers untill 8 or 9 at this one though. Jared

Late additions

Bob Hackett

>Picked up a 1/8 side bead body by J kellog,Amherst MS and a 1/4 reeding body by Marten Doscher,New York. Both were just the bodies,no wedges or irons.Paid $4 for the pair,no cracks, chips or hang holes. One minor chip in the boxing on the reeding plane.

Could have had 9 other assorted bodies that were in good shape but not as good as these for $2 each also.I`ll make wedges and irons for these and see how it goes.I don`t think those others are going anywhere now that summer`s over.

Re: Buck Bros Chisel

Joel Oswald

>I found a sweet old Buck Bros Cast Steel Socket chisel at the flea market for $1! The blade is only 2 inches long, but useable. It had half a handle, so I made another out of oak. I reground and sharpened it, and it works beutifully! And it keeps it's edge very well. It's probably better than my Hirsch's from Lee valley. I hope I find more like this.

Yes, some cool stuff.

Doug Littlejohn

>A close friend and fellow WW (though almost all power) is leaving for Arkansas and I had the opportunity to go by and look over what I might want. I came away whith a ceww eyars of old WoodSmith, WW Jounral & Wood magazines, a type 11 #4 in beautiful condition, a 5 1/2 in very good condition and a #5. A set of 11 lathe turning chisels and a storage cabinet for them and some wood. She is keeping an eye out for other stuff for me that might be left over from their yardsale.

I was very pleased with the #4 and the #5-1/2.

>Doug,

Here recently I have been giving my long neglected 5 1/2 quite a workout, and I must say that other than my Scrub it is fast becoming my favorite plane. Seems to be very versitile. Hope you enjoy yours as well
