Forty seems a little high but since I'm not in an old tool hotbed, sometimes I'll pay a little more than the ebay prices just because it's so rare to find a good item in the wild.

According to Walters they go between $25 and $75. coarse I'm sure that's for a plane that is 100% complete, Good+ finish, etc, etc. If your is complete and ready to go to work I'd say that you did fairly well. If you can get a nice one for $20 or less than you're starting to get into the bragging rights area.
Sure, you might be able to get on for a little less of the bay, but by the time you figure in S&H, and take into account the frar factor of getting a less that descibed as tool than all of asudden the $40 don't look to bad at all. Besides, there is nothing like the thrill of finding your rust in the wild yourself is there.
Did you by chance haggle the price down any?
