OT Rough start to the weekend

Steve Kubien

>This past week I have taken up a new hobby...aikido. Always been interested in the martial arts, particularly the samurai and their ways. Great workout and will definately help get me in shape.

There was a small class last night (Friday) and our sensai was using me to demonstrate a take-down to another student. Between his speed (faster than fingers from a tablesaw) and my lack of balance/clumsiness, we both heard an exquisite tearing sound as I went to the mat. High pain and embarrassment saw me icing my right elbow for the rest of the night.

X-rays didn't show any breaks but one of the pictures is being sent to a specialist. For now it looks like either a severe sprain or mild tear. I can't straighten my arm and I drop just about anything I pick-up. Looks like minimal shop time for a while and no-contact in aikido. Too bad because my muscles were starting to adapt to the work-load.

Perhaps I'll pick up a good book or practise meditation.

...sounds like an irresponsible teacher to me. Be careful with him. Enjoy some quiet time and heal well!

>Sorry to hear of the injury Steve. Be very careful with this until more in known, because if you have some torn it is NOTHING to fool with. If you don't believe me ask Ray W. he just went in for surgury for something torn. don't sound like he's having a good time with it neither.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm, gotta wonder what the school is going to do concerning this. do they have insurance to cover injuries inflicted by the instructor, or did you sign a wavier saying that you wouldn't hold them accoutable for injuries?

I'd recommend that you stick to jogging and light weights for a bit 'til you get some weight off, and gain a bit of muscle tone, otherwise you're looking at more injuries.

Hope you heal up quickly, and that it is just a sprain.

Oh, I don't think so....

Steve Kubien

>Imagine you were on a woodworking course taught by Klausz, Krenov, Odate or the late Tage Frid. Picture them guiding your hand along the surface of a board as you plane the perfect shaving, or pair a sliver from the walls of a mortise. Suddenly, one of you slips and cuts the other. Nothing too serious but enough to keep you out of the shop for a while. Would you consider the other to be irresponsible? I doubt it. You were being taught by a master and a accident happened. Just an accident.

That's where I am at now. I do not think my teacher/sensai did anything wrong and I harbour no ill feelings. It was an accident. Nothing more. In fact, I feel pretty lucky to be able to train with him one on one, as most of us would working with any from the above list. I am looking forward to doing so again...but not for a few weeks.

With all due respect,

>Hey Steve,

Glad to hear. I'm very happy to be wrong!

Good thing you didn't use Bob Vila and Reilly as an example...you can always tell which season you're watching by how many fingers Reilly has left. Hope the show doesn't last a full ten seasons.

Happy healing...Rob

>Don't get me wrong Steve I certainly wasn't suggesting suing, just merely thinking about the "what ifs" should there be some heavy medical expenses is all.

I'm sure it was an accident and that Sensai feels badly, but........................

I thinking that if there was anything seriously bad wrong you'd well know it my now, so chances are it's just a strain or sprain, which should heal up quickly. Meantime take it easy, and next time sensai ask for a volunteer try to hide. ;~)

>Steve, this reminds me of a class I had in taekwondo about 15 years ago. The master was demonstrating some self-defense techniques to new students, and he used me as an "assailant". He instructed me to grab him from behind, kind of like a bear hug in reverse. The technique he was demonstrating was to bend the assailant's fingers backwards.

Usually, this would quickly cause the assailant to lose his grip. However, the fingers on my right hand are double-jointed, so it had no affect. his reaction was hilarious: "What's the matter with you?" Of course he was quick to figure out another way to bring me to the mat... No injury, just funny.

Sorry to hear it Steve

>It sounds like your exercise to keep in shape will be confined to walking for a while. Keep the faith though, there are plenty of woodworking books and magazines to read while you heal.

>Hi Todd,

Yup, I signed the standard waiver. I am not one of those people who looks to sue somebody at every corner (not that I'm implying you are!). In fact, it never crossed my mind. Lawsuits like that seem to be more prevalent south of the border than they are here. Oh sure, we've got people who sue tobacco companies because they got cancer but I don't think we've had anyone sue a fast-food chain because the coffee was too hot.

I am NOT looking to re-start the thread we had a few months back about lawsuits.

Does anyone remember the cartoon Bloom County? They did a spoof of Sean Penn and his previous aggressive behaviour towards the ever present photographers. In that strip, Mr. Penn punched out a shutter-bug and broke the guys nose. The lawsuit that followed was not against Sean Penn, not against the bar which over-served him, and not against the distiller. It was directed at Nikon because the failed to put a label on their cameras, "Injury may result from photographing psychopathic Hollywood hot-heads." Well, I always laugh at that strip.

Ah, but walking doesn't cost anything!

Steve Kubien

>Yeah, walking would be wonderful if I could commit to it. Same flys with biking or weights (heck I used to coach powerlifting). I don't know, I was looking for something completely different and aikido counts. Also, I needed to be making a significant financial outlay to help encourage me to go for the first few months.

I got a message from my sensai inquiring about my elbow. It's already getting better which leads me to believe it's just a bad sprain. I'll keep going to class for the foot-work techniques, the aerobic workout and for the experience. I'll lay off any sort of contact for a while though.

Wonderful philosophy for martial arts. The traditional has no offensive moves...though of course Steven Seagal is infamous for developing such.... :- (

Hope your elbow heals quickly.

I'd find a sensei who's judgmnent matches his combat skills.
