Weekend Projects

Ernie Miller Topeka

>Its going to be a LOOONG weekend and for some of you longer than the rest of us. So I will keep those of you in Florida and the east cost in my thoughts. I on the other hand have sunny skies to look forward to. I hope to get a couple coats of finish on the wifes island bar thingy. I want to get one more of the boxes for under the bench finishes and a coat of two of BLO on it I might scrape the bench and add a coat of BLO to it also. The wife has a few things planes also so that takes away from the shop but if finish is drying who cares. I also need to work on cleaning the power tool shop as it is time to start making Toys for Tots I think I will challenge each of you to make ten toys this year for children less well off than yours. That should easily be 20.000 toys that this group could make. Are you up to it? I know there is 50-75 of you that make toys already but more of you should give it a try. I will start on jet fighters and periscopes and move on to other things. Coloring book totes went over big as well as keepsake boxes for young girls. EVERY ONE STAY SAFE & HAVE A ROCKIN GOOD WEEKEND!!!!

Plans?

Steve Kubien

>Hi Ernie,

Have you got some plans for the types of toys you build that you care to share? That is the sort of project I will make shop time for.

As for the weekend....recover from my first week of aikido workouts and maybe finish the guitar stand I am building for the Guitar Stand Contest, whose closing date has come and gone. Oh well. It's still going to be a nice piece even if I can't win the chisels.

Take care,

>Started already!

Put plywood over windows, cover roof turbines, empty out carport, clear stuff (aka projectiles) from yard, buy ice and water and charcoal, increase pool chlorine level...

Fun!

>Ernie,I think that's a good idea. Also I think if you push a little bit(reminders)you'll motivate people like me who may do it but probably will procrastinate.Sounds like a worthy cause.

I have to go to work saturday cause the client is a teacher,so it's either sat or the holiday. She don't get weekdays off and has to be there.I'll make the most of sunday tho.Gonna start the table I'm planning as a wedding present.(no plans yet)---Jack

>Spend some time with the boys. Ethan's B'day is Sunday so a couple of parties to fit in. Laminate the last third of the kids' bench top and then get the thirds glued up. Build the base and get it all put together with wedged mortise and tenon joints.

I think I'll let the boys plane the top themselves. They both enjoyed shrinking some red oak with the block plane last night. Even the 5 YO can take a pretty good shaving with things set sharp and thin. . .

Chlorine

Don Thompson Cutler Ridge, Florida

>Well, the general worry is that the power will be off for a while (maybe quite a while), rainwater will dilute the Cl, and there will more foreign matter introduced to the pool. Worst case: the pool will turn into a green mucky mess. By boosting the Cl level, we hope to delay that eventuality.

Or, at least, SWMBO convinced me that it would be a good idea. (and she is/was a chemist) I am new to this.

8:00 PM - the storm seems to have stalled over the Bahamas.

>We always did the chlorine thing when we had a pool and yes it does work.

Up here very little rain and not much wind, but tomorrow who knows. Just about tired of the news coverage, going out on patio and enjoy the evening.

Waiting...

Don Thompson Cutler Ridge, Florida

>We are all buttoned up, my shop has yard stuff shoved in it making it unusable, the stores are all closed....

I wish it would stop hovering out there. NE. I think NE would be a good direction.

Maybe I will read my new copy of Salaman today.
