OT: Surgery Sucks!

Christopher Fitch @ Memphis

>Well, I trudged over to the surgeon today to have a Lipoma removed from my back.

All I have to say is... it sucks! Now the nurses, staff, and surgeon were all very nice people, and in terms of medical experiences, it went quite well. I have no negative thoughts about it except that the center was FREAKING COLD!!! However, one of the nicest experiences was having hot blankets placed on me.

So why does it suck? I can't move!!! Well that's not true. I can sit here and type and read a bit. But I can't get out and work in the shop. I'm close to having my bench top finally complete. All I have to do is drill the dog holes, mount my holdfast, and mount the two bench stops. At least I get 2 days off from my regular job.

Agreed...

Hope you heal quick.

>Chris,

I have no experience with any sort of back surgery. When I was 26years old, my appendix had worn out its welcome and it ruptured. The discomfort during the healing period was much easier to deal with than the pain prior to surgery. Oh well, I was home 2 days later in time to watch Monday Night Football so it wasn't too bad.

Now the 'discomfort' in my knees today is not enjoyable. I attended my first aikido class last night and while I am pleased to have made it through the entire class, I am paying for it today. Those who have met me will attest to the fact that I am not an ideal physical specimam. Now where did I put the Rub-A535??????

Enjoying sitting at work.......

>I know how you fell,really I do.

The good news is that when the healing is done you`ll wonder why you put it off for so long. You`ll also begin to understand just how much your life had changed as you adapted to the pain.

GOOD NEWS!You`re about to get your old life back.Though it`s your old life it`ll still feel new.

Hoping you heal quickly, the honey-do list is getting longer every day.

Yup, sure does.

>Hi Chris,

I'm glad to hear everything came out OK (pun intended :o). I know what you're feeling. Sitting and waiting to get going again it hard to take. Healing is important and is usually shorter then it originally seemed.

I had biceps reconstruction surgery two months ago for a completely ruptured lower tendon. Ripped it completely out of my forearm. Luckily I found a good surgeon in Philly that used a used a hand drill and brace to put in the anchor and some fance hand stitchin' to reattach the tendon (hand tool content).

Just look to the bright side like I'm trying to; you now have time to think about design problems, shop layout, flea-marketing (hey, walking is good for healing), future projects, prioritizing the honey-do, etc, etc, etc

I'm healing with you.

>Chris,

I had some work done on lipoma on my head last year. As I recall the work was fairly painful but the recovery wasn't. Sometimes it helps to have a thick skull!

The only downside was that my chronically challenged head had a huge bandage on the back of it for a week or so.

Get some rest!

Brad

PS - The bench will still be there for you!

I hope you're feeling better very soon and can get back to your shop.

Yes, the warm blankets are great. But their pleasant effects can be more than neutralized if you need to undergo a demeaning "shave" before surgery. (Ask me no questions and I'll tell you no lies.)

Re: OT: Surgery is good

Dennis

>Has been long 2 months, but now i see the benefits.

Can no longer smoke, got more money for tools and wood

Can hear better, no more "huh"

No more dust, all hand tools for me from now on.

And that big mass in my head was benign and all gone now, so i got lot to look forward to.

All those years of woodworking and smoking took a toll on me and now i got 2nd chance, so for me surgery is good

>Gee Chris I really don't know for sure what a Lipoma is, but I can't imagine it was any fun having it, nor having doc slicin' and dicin' up your back. But hey, only a few days of down time? Man you're getting off easy! Had had a large pilodonal cyst removed from my dairy-air a few years ago and was down for 3 WEEKS. I could sit, either I was standing or laying on my stomach, which fortunatly is the way I also sleep. Think Percaset------Gooooooooooooooooooooooood la-la-la-la-la-la stuff. :~) The only bright side to this was that I was Japan and got three weeks off from that killer squadron that I was attached to. I was there for 3 months when I went in for my surgury and I was so exhausted that just before being wheeled into the OR and nurse came up and touched me when jumped me out of my skin, which jumped her out of skin because she thought I was sedated. I remember that moment vividly because I was so tired that it actually hurt when she touched me.

did I ever tell you the story about the morning after my vesectamy? Ahhhhhhhhhh laddie, that's a good 'un. Remind me to tell you sometime eh?

Take it easy physically for a bit and get all healed up eh. I'm sure there plenty of old WW mags to re-read, or internet "research" to get caught up on eh.

>Can't talk to the surger because I have never had any, but I can sure attest to the warm blankets. When I was doing the chemo thing, I would get sceptic and start chilling sometimes. Luckily for me, the maternity ward was right across the hall from the oncology ward and I could sometimes get the nurses to get me a warm blanket. Amazing how such a simple thing can make so much difference isn't it?

Be patient (pun not intended)

Bill Houghton, Sebastopol, CA

>My wife had major abdominal surgery a couple of years ago, and the doctor told her the recovery period was about six weeks. We realized later that he meant it takes HIM about six weeks to recover from the surgery. She, on the other hand, moved slowly from post-surgery to 100% over about a year.

She's in much better shape now than before the surgery, so it was worth it, but she found that hard to believe in the first few months after.

All of this to say, stay determined, but be patient at the same time.

Glad you are ok, and hope that recovery is quick and pain-free. I know what you mean about the cold OR and the warm blankets. Been there, done that, got the scars.
