Chisel problem

Svante Nilsson

>Hi,

I am making my first batch of A2 steel pairing chisels. The steel have been ripped to right width, the tang formed and the cutting edges grinded. When I started to lap the chisels (they are still not hardened) I saw that the backs were slightly convex, which makes it very difficult to lapping them straight.

Is it possible to bend them straight?

Thanks,

Svante

>It seems that grinding them flat would be much easier and surer. Unhardened material removal should be fast. We started with a belt sander, 50 grit, to remove oxide finish and that also flattened the metal, quickly.

>I would wait until after the chisels are hardened to do any finish work to them(including grinding the edges sharp). No sense doing that sort of work twice, unless you REALLY like working with waterstones, scary sharp,or whatever your brand of poison is.

If the blades are not severely bowed(and they shouldn`t be if your heat treater knows his job) you can usually place them bow up over 2 blocks and straighten them with a deadblow mallet.

>I have just used a fine file for work like that. As for grinding the bevel your waisting your time IMO your just going to have to grind it away heat treating ruins fine edges.
