Two Cherrys Chisels

Jim

>Learned something interesting at the IWF in Atlanta this weekend. I am shopping for a set of six Two Cherrys Chisels - the U.S. rep for Two Cherrys, Robert Larson Co. was at the show selling the set at the reduced price of $130. Meanwhile Lee Valley was also at the show selling a set of Hirsch firmer chisles that in all respects seemed identical to the Two Cherrys including the full length polish, for $87. I asked the Rober Larson rep why I might pay the higher price for the Two Cherrys. He told me he had to be honest with me. The Two Cherrys and Hirsch are the same chisel, from the same company and the same factory in Germany. Over the years people have developed a preference for certain brand names and will buy the Two Cherrys for that reason, but the only difference between them and the Hirsch chisles is the name stamped on the handle. It is quite refreshing to encounter an honest sales person from time to time. I bought the Hirsch set.

>Jim,

Your Two Cherries salesman echoed what's been often repeated around here, and elsewhere, for quite a long while. Lots of folks asserted that Hirsch and Two Cherries chisels were identical twins--like human twins they're exactly the same except for their names.

I don't know if a salesman is a reliable source to confirm this, but I hope so. I bought Hirsch chisels after being repeatedly assured they are the same as Two Cherries.

Whatever the pedigree of Hirsch chisels, you're going to love them.

BTW, an overnight bath in lacquer thinner, and a little encouragement with a rough cloth or steel wool, will remove all the lacquer on the blades.
