Saw cleaning?

Doug

>I have an old Richardson backsaw that needs a little TLC. How should I clean the "patina" off the blade to safely reveal the etch? Also, what's the best way to clean the gunk off the handle? Thanks as always/

>I use a wooden sanding block with some medium grit sand paper and rub front to back and should clean the saw up.To do a real good job probably have to take the handle off but I wouldn't worry about it esp. if the handle gives you any trouble taking it off....This is what I do to clean saw handles, works great for me.I just take some WD40 spray it on the handle, let set about 20 sec. and then rub it down with some fine steel wool.Seems to really take the grime and dirt off and is good for small paint splats too.Afterward I wipe down with a rag and maybe some wax, thats about it....Todd

Note about sandpaper usage

Dan Moening

>I my limited experience I've found that using mineral spirits or WD40 with wet/dry sandpaper works great...but wipe the "slurry" often...and quit when the slurry changes from reddish to a grayish color...once the slurry turns to gray you are sanding the metal off the blade, not the rust.
