Scraper plane: LV vs. LN

Frank D. in Montreal

>Hi Everyone,

I work a lot with figured hard maple and the big countertop I have to smooth out is just too big for my cabinet scraper. Any comments on the two scraping planes (LV, LN) would be appreciated, especially from someone who has had a chance to try both of them out. I can't seem to remember if the LN scraper plane has the knob to adjust the flex in the blade...does the LV have any handy features that the LN doesn't? I'm not a huge fan of LV blades and would probably opt for the LN partly because of this, but I'm willing to consider the LV if it's overall a better scrcaping plane.

Thanks,

Frank

>Frank,

I've been fortunate enough to try both, and there are some comments comparing the two in my review of the L-V. I think the option to use, and bow, the thinner blade gives the L-V a slight edge over the L-N (and that's from an L-N owner - the L-V had to go back), but you can't honestly go wrong with either.

Cheers, Alf

LV - get extra thin blades

>If you opt for the Veritas, get several extra thin blades. They don't hold the burr edge for long (compared to regular bench plane iron) so it is nice to have 4 or so blades ready....then rehone and burnish after you're done.

I like the thin blade in my Veritas scraper plane. The ability to bow the blade also gives you the ability to tweak depth of cut easily. Though that also then changes the radius of the cut - more pronounced for bowing more and less pronounced for bowing less.

A lot of good info. To bow or not to bow, that is the question...

>Thanks Tim,

I'll think about getting some extra blades even if I don't burnish my blades as I do with hand scrapers. I usually use a cabinet scraper and not a scraper plane, but I've gotten very fine results (wispy shavings) so far with just a good sharpening.

This is the rule with all scraping tools. The blades have to be soft enough to burr, whereas a normal plane blade is harder.

The cutting action is also "high intensity" compared to a normal plane.

>Tried both the LV is the run away winner. You'll be shocked at how long the LV scraper plane will go. As you keep tipping the blade and adj the tumb screw. It's the only tool I have had great results with tiger maple. I find buying a second blade keeps the flow of work going.

>Thanks Jim,

I'm going to give the LN a spin this weekend (a friend of mine has one--I didn't even know!) but when time comes to lay down the cash I think I'll probably go for the LV. I guess I'll just change the handle when I have some spare time :).

>If your going to play around with it IMO it's all set up.I set mine up on a piece of glass use one or 2 sheets of paper under the sole. Darrell had a great idea that I use where I save the nasty grained pieces to test the scraper.

>Hi Jim,

I got a few emails recommending the LV highly. I'm sure it's a great tool. I just don't really like the LV handles; I can feel them whereas the LN handles just seem to suck my hand in. They don't look so hot either IM(not so)HO. But hey, it's the results that count; I'm sure I won't get around to making new handles any time soon. Heck, I haven't even started my chisels yet!
