Work Bench Screw Question

Mark Kuzee

>I am in the process of restoring an old work bench. It is probably from the first half of the 20th century. It is all beech construction with wooden vice screws. The wooden "nuts" for the screws looks like they have been held in place by several methods. Glue followed by nails and some of those corrugated fasteners followed by more glue. I have removed the nuts and am about to attempt to re-fasten them to the bench. My dillema is what is the best way. The wood screws are in good shape but not perfectly straight. That would mean during use if the nut may bind a lttle if firmly glued. I think anything else would just work loose. How were these nuts orriginally attached to the bench? Any suggestions?

Thanks

Mark

>Hi Mark,

I don't think your question is clear enough for an intelligent response (That's why I'm writing you!).

Please tell us if you are working on a face vise, tail vise, twin screw, etc. Are the nuts attached under the bench somehow? Is that the problem? Are the nuts reacting clamping forces?

A picture sure would help.

On my bench, the nuts fit into sockets let into the bottom of the bench. They are not attached in any way and can float. They are held in place by the wooden screws which are held in place by the hole which is bored into the front of the bench top.
