Ever seen chisels like this? *LINK*

>Hi everyone,

There have been numerous posts recently about descriptions of tools online, particularly on Ebay. This one touches a soft spot with me....

Has anyone ever seen wood chisels like this? Last time I saws these was when I worked in the dental industry on the supply side. They are actually called elevators and are used in dental surgery, especially extractions of teeth. Boy, I wish new something (!) about what they are selling. I realize there are lots of knowledgeable vednors but at least tell us when you don't know something.

Gettin' of ma soapbox.....

>Oh, I dunno Steve, I guess this one could be an easy enough mistake to make.

Wonder of they'd make good mini carvers for real inticate work?

>My younger brother is a surgeon and while pawing thru some of the tools in his shop I came across a set of beautiful stainless steel gouges. He told me they were given to him by another surgeon(orthopedics). He also said that he only kept them in the toolbox to impress other WWers as they wouldn`t work in anything harder than pine.Seems the edge just folded and the were just too much of a PTA too keep resharpening. So much for at least this line of pretty tools.

I did like the operating table he was using as an assembly bench though.Power up,down, tilt, and a nifty SS top with a gutter around the edge so even if he spills a can of finish it never makes it to the floor. All the casters lock solid enough so he can use it as an extra bench if needed.

I should have stayed in school. Then again,I get far more shop time than he does.

Nope.

>These will be some grade of stainless steel. They are generally a little on the brittle side. Sharpening is the ultimate PITA. Dental tools will not take near the edge that our tools will.

As for being a case of mistaken identity, these do not have a cutting edge of any significance. They are used to dig around tooth roots and bone fragments to loosen the periodontal ligament and thus, allow removal of the tooth. They are merely fancy pry-bars.

I don't know, it just struck a nerve with me.

Quite enough detail, thank you

>I've got a tooth-cleaning this afternoon. I really don't need to hear about "digging around" with tools like that in the mouth. I have enough neurosis about it, thank you!

Terribly sorry

Steve Kubien

>Sorry about that Bill. I sometimes forget that some people 'have a thing' about going to the dentist, or other doctors. I hope I didn't make things worse.

Again, I am sorry....

Just playing

Bill Houghton, Sebastopol, CA

>Actually, I'm fine with that kind of thing; I was just playing.

Good news: I got compliments from the hygienist (on my teeth, that is; she sure never would have told me how handsome I am unless she was seeing how many lies she could tell in one day).
