Defective Disston Etch

Todd Hughes

>Been some talk here lately of different saw etches so thought I would share one on a saw I bought yesterday that i thought was a little different. Is an about a Mint condition saw that has a clear bright etch of a D12 saw but as you can see etched over it is the world DEFECTIVE. While a D12 it has a handle just like a D8 instead of the different looking D12 handle. Saw looks to be from the late 1940's early 50's and i don't know if the old style handle was done away with by then. Handle is stamped "D" too which i take to mean defective. If saw is defective can't prove it by me as it looks fine to me.I have had another "defective" Disston befor that was etched differently and said it was for sale only to Disston employees.

Well thought this etch was kind of neat and more then a little different and it enabled me to talk the seller at the Jersy flea market down from $7 to a more reasonable $5 since I pointed out that the tool was "Defective". I have had a very good week tool buying, at least for the old tool hell i live in, am going to my every other week antique shop and a big Steam Show whoes Flea market i always done well at tomorrow....might have to post a buying report...wish me luck!

>I had an Atkins panel saw with a simliar stamp over the etch. The floral pressing in the handle was off center, so I guess that was the defect. Interesting though, the teeth weren't set either.
