Filling Knotholes

>I want to fill a knothole in a cherry board using a black heat stick I bought from WoodCraft. My question has to do with preparing the knothole. Anything special required? How about longevity? The knothole is about 3/4" oblong. TIA

What I do

jim_reed@marietta

>If it is an open knothole, I use a chisel to carve a new knot. Carve, test fit, carve, etc. Glue into place. After drying, cut flush and then plane smoothe. Then all you have to fill is the area around it. Good luck with yours.

>What about an Epoxy Inlay? I have a couple of knots I'd like to cover up in a Maple board and thought I'd fill most of it with some sort of putty like Durham's and then do a dark brown epoxy inlay.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Dan Clermont

>Agree with Jim. Again. I don't like filling holes with waxy stuff - it's like having body putty on your car, just creepy. I have been called eccentric, but I have a number of empty knotholes in things I've made. Or, even better, chop a butterfly over the whole thing - properly done, it really adds some class to the piece.

PS Jim - got the cutters, Thanks

Thanks, guys....

>The knothole was empty and what was left was black. I melted some of the burn stick into the hole and built it up until it completely filled the hole. It sands very easily and I don't think the average person can tell it isn't a natural knothole. I've seen formulas somewhere...one of Tage Frid's books??.....where he makes up some of this stuff.

Here it is

>Here is a picture of a recent filled knot. This one is cherry and is the fall front of a desk. I whittled out the *new* knot and glued it in. Then filled in the cracks with brown glue. After stain, it will be an interesting item of charm.
