Question about Sightings

Christopher Fitch @ Memphis

>I saw the image...

very impressive work.

So what is a good list of what Mr. Cardenas needs?

Planes? Bench chisels? Saws? Carving chisels?

more?

Is he focused only on carving or does he need regular ole' tools like #4 smoothers, etc.?

Just trying to get an idea of what he needs...

;)

>Thanks for the heads u[p I don't do frames so I never see the sightings I might have some stuff in a box that might work for him. I don't know how big a town or village he is from but that might be a hot spot for tools some day if we all would send just one toolthat we don't use. I hope he has a network of locals to share the wealth with.

>Here's a response I sent in reply to an e-mail earlier today. You pretty much guessed it... Serafin needs everything.

Ellis

If you would like to send Serafin a care package, you can send it by regular

mail or a courier such as DHL. His address is:

Serafin Cardenas

Prolongacion Manco Capac No. 924

Ayacucho, Peru

As far as what to send him... he needs everything. I think he did most of

his carving with sheer willpower. In particular, he would be extremely

grateful to have some decent bench chisels, carving chisels, carving stones,

user planes, decent rasps, measuring and marking tools, etc. His setup is

very primitive, but his dirt floor shopis full of big planks of cedar and

walnut. He was so glad to meet me that he didn't want me to go. I told him I

would tell all my friends about him. I don't think he knows just how many

friends I have. :-)

Any contribution however small will be appreciated. Suit yourself.

Thanks, and best regards,

Ellis

Good question

>Here's some shipping data for the Postal Service.

My two concerns are:

1) the package getting there. However, insurance can cover this.

2) any items we send being prohibited for import into Peru. The USPS site has a list but I do not see tools on there. The only thing close is:

"Household articles of iron, steel, copper, and aluminum. "

But tools aren't household items....

Also...

Christopher Fitch @ Memphis

>I have done a bit of comparison on shipping costs to Peru through various services.

This is what I found... I may be off on these since the only thing that seemed available to Peru was express service

DHL is about $150

UPS is about the same

Fedex does not ship

Postal Service: $28 for airmail parcel service...

I think oversea service was about $15 or so...

If anyone else has some info, please feel free to include it.
