>I picked up an old nibbed saw last week that is stamped Truett Bro Co. in a small arc where you'd generally find an etch. If there was also an etch, it's long gone to rust. The other unique thing about this saw is the length of the handle in front of the grip hole. It's about half again longer than a Disston. Can any one shed some light on this company.

>How about a picture? some times you can identify the maker by the handle shape. most likley made by one of the big 4 if it is US made. have you tried cleaning the blade?

>Dale,

According to Erv Shaeffer's book about handsaws, Truitt Bro. & Co. were a hardware store in Philadelphia in the 1840's and 1850's. It doesn't hint at who made the saws for them.

I have a Truitt Bro. & Co. backsaw with domed sawnuts that I like very much. I haven't seen any other examples of saws marked this way, so I think they are fairly rare.

>I'll get a picture posted tomorrow. I wet sanded the blade with 220 grit, and the stamp appeared, but nothing else. It's pretty rusty.
