ventured into the deep end

>Today I attempted my first hand cut half blind dove tails. Too many mistakes to enumerate. (Maybe I'm the one who is half blind.) I think I'll cut the tails off and mark them as best as I can from the pins. If they are halfway decent I may even post a pic or two. Goodnight...

>Good luck with your first try. If you have the tails cut out you're halfway there. Hand cutting the pins is a little tricky. Once you mark them you can either, with a saw at about 45 degrees, cut from mark to mark or, if you don't care about how the inside of a drawer looks, over-cut past your bottom mark. Then, using a sharp chisel, chop out your waste.

To assist you in marking the pins use whatever vises you can lay your hands on, 90 degree corner vise or bench vise. Cut on the line.

Again, good luck!

>I kinda secocand Roger on this one. corner clamps are great for holding the parts together why you mark them out then cut at a 45 as far as you can then have at it with your chisels. This is the one joint that I think a pair of squed chisels would come in handy but I nave have got around to making some. You can do it we want pics.

>yep, the tails are coming off tonight. the pins look fairly decent, just (way) too deep plus I got the angle off. I can blame a couple of beers and my son (call him Norm ;~)) coming over to work on his birch book case. Just sort of lost my markings in all the conversation and noise.
