RE; Antique store etiquette
Mike G.
>Well, I've been perusing the afore mentioned antique store quite a bit over the last few weeks. I found out that the owner sometimes will do a little trading. I buttered them up by buying a book, Fine Woodworking Techniques Book 3, and paying the asking price, 12.00. I've had my eye on a 1900's vintage #48 match plane. They had it marked at a C-note. I had an old L.S.S. Inclinometer that I don't have a use for. It's a plumber's level and I'm a carpenter.
I asked the owner if they would like to make a trade straight up. They produced Walter's Stanley pricing guide and looked it up, then handed me the gook and asked me to find a comparable stanley level in the book. I found one in the book and they priced out pretty close, although the L.S.S. looks heftier than the comparable Stanley model. So, we made a deal. I'm now the proud owner of a Stanley # 48 in excellent condition. Hopefully, we both came out on the deal because I've got my eye on a # 65 knuckle cap block plane and maybe we can trade again.
I've got to get me one of those John Walter books.
