Garage sale finds

Moses Yoder in White Pigeon, MI

>I am a very busy man and simply do not have time to go fishing. I thought about this on the way to St. Joe, MI this morning with my gear in the van. I drive along SR 12, which winds through a lot of farm country but gets a lot of traffic so garage sales along here are frequent. I find very few tools at these sales, but you never know and so I have to stop at most whenever I see them, which drives my dearest Megan absolutely crazy. Today she was not with me however, so I had guilt free garage saling and took great advantage of it. The weather was absolutely fantastic. I found absolutely nothing worth gloating about, but did pick up a 1975 Starret catalog and price list and a 1976 Brown & Sharpe catalog both in fine condition, the B&S like new and the Starret with just a slight crease on the front where it folds to open, for ten cents each. Made my day. Then when I got home I found Megan had bought a neat old set of letter stamps in a nice wooden box at an auction. Here's wishing everyone's day was as great as mine.

Yeah, but...

>Did you fish? Next time you go, after you get out of the channel, look about 3/4 mile north of the north pier. Should see some clear bluff about there. You'd be looking right towards my mom's house. I grew up in St. Joe, and mom's been north of Jean Klock now for about 15 years.

Really, strangely small world sometimes...

>Scott,

St. Joe is a nice community, I lived there a couple of years in the early 80's. I worked for the railroad, Chessie System at the time, that crosses the river on the swing bridge. My office was in the depot before it became a restaurant.

>Funny thing, that bridge - don't know how many times I'll be half watching something on TV, and it'll show up in some show.

Zitta's completely went to pot when they moved from their little trailer to that depot. They used to make the best burgers and fries...

>I got in about four hours of fishing yesterday, with no fish; I missed several good hits. There are some summer run skamania moving through (awesome fish) and I saw a guy catch one so it was well worth the trip over. St. Joe is a very beautiful city; I half envy anyone who gets to live there. I worked on a kitchen there one winter and it even looks good in the wintertime ;) It's about 1-1/2 hours drive for me and I probably spend about 12 afternoons out of every year sitting on one of the piers with a fishing rod. Garage sales on the way there and back are just a bonus.

NO FISH ?!

Cooper Suter

>What's up Moses? Don't they have Gobies in Lake Michigan yet?

We went out to one of the Bass Islands in Lake Erie for the weekend.

It wasn't a fishing trip, but I took the pole and did a little dock fishing.

I did OK casting lures for the smallmouth and rock bass when the kids left me alone.

My 5 year old daughter was really bugging me to fish so I stole some worms from some other kids and we just dropped hooks straight down for Gobies.

We never had to wait for more than a couple of seconds and you had a hit. It's amazing how many gobies there are, especially considering there weren't any (Eurasian invader) a few years ago. It was good kid fishing.

We did get lucky, as it got near dusk, the rock bass and white perch (another trash species) really came in, and we actually caught some decent fish.

No tools, but I did get a call last night about what I hope will be a decent plow plane.

Coop.

Gobies?

Don Thompson, Cutler Ridge, Florida

>I was reading your account, scratching my head, wondering what Gobies were (spent my summers near the eastern end of lake Ontario, mostly fishing).

Exotic invader, eh? How are the affecting the native populations?
