Saw identification?

Ernie Miller Topeka

>Is there a web page for Atkins saws? how about Simmonds. it would be nice to find a page like the disstonian instute. I picked up this really peachy saw today it is a J F RICHARDS Kansas City Mo. super fancy carved handle taper ground special steel blade. If it were a disston it would be a #12 but the handle dosent have that little half circle cut out on the lower inside of the handle. real sharp and an interesting notch cut in it for hanging. like I have never seen.

Also is there any intrest of starting a page some where with pictures of saws and there etch? I think it might be of help as a referance page for people in the future?

>Richards was one of the largest hardware distributors in the midwest. I have several of their tools and they are all high quality. I don't think Richards made his own saws. I have one that looks like it's probably a Simons. It is marked Rich-Con, Kansas City & Oklahoma City. If your saw is just marked Richards, I think it is probably early. Follow the link for some interesting Richards history.

>Fred - Thanks for that! I have a chisel that's marked "Rich-Con" that I was wondering about. It's a good quality chisel, now I know a bit more of it's history.

Ernie, if you didn't notice on that link, the second page has a few different Atkins saw models. If you did, then please ignore that last statement.

>If you are talking about Simmons and not Simonds - there is a page on thckk.org on the company. Simmons (of Keen Kutter fame) didn't manufacture there own saws (just like they didn't manufacture their planes, either), but had them manufactured for them - quite likely by one of the big four doing that at the time - Disston, Atkins, Simonds, or Bishop. I'll put the simmons link at the bottom - I don't think it has much in the way of model numbers, but is a good overview of the company.

If you're really interested in old hand saws - here are a couple of books for reference I haven't read them, but have them bookmarked for doing so later:

Another great site, which may or may not have some of the old tool makers catalogs available on line is

>Hey Fred,

I've been researching Rich Con for awhile now. Do you have any other info? I have found some in the KC library and one there are still some relatives in the KC area I need to contact.

All my tools are stamped Rich-Con so Ernie's saw has me pumped up. I'll have to go wrestle him for it.

>Here is a picture of the etch. with a cleaning this one should be crisp. Once again I ask should fe be keeping a site some where with pictures of saws and there etches when we can? it seems like it would make a great referance by looking at the handles and other parts from the major saw makers we should be able ti identify who made which hardware brands. many of thes sellers had great etches and it would be a waist to lose this part of history.
