>What angle micro bevel do you put on the chisels and do these come in a leather or cowhide role?

>Mine looks like split cowhide about 1/8" thick, with leather strap and brass buckle/rivets. Made by a small leather good business in France.

Unless you want the roll, order the set without and save $50, which gets things down to $40 per chisel. You can always buy the roll later if you find the need.

>What's the difference between leather and cowhide? Well...., leather is the dressed (usually by tanning) skin of any suitable animal. Cowhide would be the skin from a cow, whether tanned or not. However, a split cowhide would infer that a tanned cowhide had been split. Spliting leaves that fuzzy surface (like you would see on a strop) intead of the smooth surface (like you would see on wallet.)

I'm sure that's way too much information and that it really wasn't necessary - but I couldn't resist. :)

>I didn't think you could order the set without the roll. There isn't anything to indicate that as an option. Annoying. The roll is very nice and all, but I'm in the midst of designing my wall tool cabinet, and I don't think I'll be taking these chisels to a job site or anything.

Oh well.

>I have one of the first LN 1/2 shoulder planes. Over the years, the upper infill has moved a bit (lifted maybe 3/32"). Mentioned this in an email to Tom and 8 days later, the refurbished tool was on my doorstep, with apologies for having to install a new wedge.

The bottom line is that with LN (and I think with many of our friends who post here), you have but to ask and you'll get what you want. There are real people on the other end of the website, and I've found them to be nothing if not accommodating.

>Useful rules of thumb: Grinding angle: 25 degrees; honing at 27 1/2 degrees; micro-bevel at 30 degrees. (David Charlesworth's FWW waterstone sharpening article, April 2004)

>Final angles (honed or microbeveled)of 25 degrees or more result in very good edge-holding while choppomg dovetails in hard stuff, with no edge chipping/folding. You can go to 30 degrees if necessary for really hard stuff, but in QSWO or maple, 25 is plenty, based on what I've seen thus far.
