Plow plane design

Steve Kubien

>Hi folks,

If you were to build a plow plane with fixed arms and a fence that moves, how far from the plane body is it reasonable to have the arms extend? The thought is to have the arms extend from both sides of the body so the plane could be used by pushing or pulling, depending on the situation.

I have heard that 6" on each side would be about the maximum so the arms do not get in the way. What say you?

Thanks in advance,

>Id say that it all depends upon what youre plowing and how the fence is attached. I like the idea of have both sides available so you can always plane with the grain.

If you are making it on spec without a specific use in mind (absolutely nothing wrong with this) Id go with design considerations. 6 sticking out of each side may look a little gangly and you might want to bring it in a bit. The length of the plane body, diameter of the arms and the thickness of the fence bear upon the ultimate look as well..

If you have a specific, repetitive task in mid, obviously go with that fence capacity. I doubt I will be plowing anything over 4 wide for the foreseeable future so, if I was as industrious as you, Id make the plane with maybe 3 capacity on either side. The shorter the arms the better it can survive that inevitable trip to the shop floor.

Good luck, David

>I would think that if you wanted to be able to use the fence on either side of the plane then a thru the body adjustment style would be more compact.Having a fence fixed to the end of the arms and allowing it to pass thru the body means just flipping it and putting it back in thru the other side. The arms could be alittle over half as long as the way you`re proposing and still get the job done. The body is also thicker and I would think that would help with holding power on the wedges.I may be missing something here but...

>might be easier to just have a couple of sets of arms. or use common dowel stock for the arms and they can be made any lenth.
