Plane Box Ideas?

David Miller from Iowa

>One of the (many) reasons I have used to justify my tool collection habit is that I have three boys (young men I guess at this point), and I always had an idea I would assemble a base collection of planes for each (done) then make them a functional, easily transportable box where they would be all tucked in with the spirit of that famous Fine Woodworking toolbox poster.

I was playing around with the layout the other day and couldnt get a good design going. Im thinking of a couple block planes, a rabbet, a #40, #4, #5, #5 and a #7 put in the smallest possible space, but still readily accessible. I thought of putting the longer ones in the bottom and then having a tray above it with the others and that might work.

Does anyone have a suggestion on the design? Lets not get too deep into the content choices please, I'm not asking the "desert island" plane question. Pictures especially appreciated.

Thanks

>How about a deep case kinda like one which a travelling salesman would use?

You could put a couple of long ones in the bottom resting on their soles with a little room left for a block or two sitting upright (if the long ones are a 7 and 2, #5's as you say). Have a removable tray over them with a #4 lying on its side with room left for block planes, scrub and few small marking tools or chisels.

Total length equals a #7 plus thickness of side panels and moulding. Depth equals the width of 3 or 4 planes plus thickness of front and back panels. Height equals something else that my brain can't work out on the fly. Sorry.

Just a thought,

P.S. I second Jim's thought on the Tool Box Book. It is excellent.

>Kind of shot sieted? Aren't you. just giving you sons hand planes. I thing you need to make room for a pair of #12 hand planes and a #4 then you need to add a set of 650's then you will need marking and layout tools brace and bits egg beater anddddd well you get the idea you are no where ready to start on the tool box yet. but it dosen't hurt to start looking for ideas. Do you need my ebay sellers name? you gotta get them tools some where. The tool box book is a good start.

(all courtesy B&G)

Block plane 1.25 Lbs each

#78 3 Lbs

#40 2.125 Lbs

#4 3.75 Lbs

#5 4.75 Lbs

#5 6.75 Lbs

#7 8.125 Lbs

That's 31 Lbs of planes! I think "easily transportable" may be tricky to achieve ;-)

>David,

In Tolpin's Toolbox book (pg 85) he shows his own wall-hung cabinet for planes and layout tools. I plan to build 2 of these soon, one for each of my sons. He shows a maple carcass with walnut accents. I'll build one like that and then reverse the woods for the second. Some modifications are planned, but this is the inspiration for the project.
