>Hi all. My new delta bench grinder will not allow me to lock in an angle so i can grind my plane irons and chisels. How many people here free hand when they grind? is it possible to do this? Anytips will be nice. Thanks!

>there's no way you can freehand grind anything it's a good way to hurt yourself. If you have or can get a look at Leonard Lee's book there is a wooden rest in there. If not just make youself one or two out of scraps and set them at 25 degree's and 30 degree's.

>There are entire courses of study on grinding steel. Here is a short answer--get a good aftermarket grinding jig. Get a wheel dressing tool. Get a dust mask. Dress the wheel flat. Set your jig to the appropriate angle (start with 30 degrees). Keep a pan of water close by. Grind your chisel slowly and dip into water frequently. It should always be comfortable to touch. If it gets hot enough to turn color (brown or blue), you have lost the temper (this is bad). Good luck.
